Eyedrops that “melt away cataracts”

How useful is this article:

Eyedrops that “melt away cataracts”

…or so was the Daily Mail’s claim in the questionably named “Good Health” section...

The alleged miracle cure for cataracts was N-Acetyl-Carnosine (NAC) eye drops, recommended at a trial dose of 1 drop per cataract eye, 5 times a day.

The drops are available for purchase through the Edinburgh-based Eyecare-Plus. While Eyecare-Plus concede that the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency advise that the produce is not licensed in Britain for use as a medicine (rather it is sold to relieve tired and sore eyes)  and is not, and may not, be sold as a cure for cataracts, Eyecare-Plus offer it as an option: “for patient wishing to try a non-surgical, as yet unproven, treatment of their cataracts”.
