Discuss your surgical techniques

A lot of the meetings we attend and  the journals we read concentrate on new treatments and techniques while basic training in surgical technique is dependent on an apprenticeship with one's trainer and osmosis from those around you, supplemented later by evolution of techniques and personal experience.

On this page, I propose to discuss the basic surgical techniques involved in a variety of cases. I'll be illustrating the techniques using video clips, and invite others to both comment and contribute their own video footage for discussion. The format should be a video clip highlighting some problems / difficulties faced in surgery. Comments and views on the footage are invited from all and should ideally suggest how the problem show might be better dealt with or avoided in the future.

The aim of this forum is not only to give those starting out in vitreoretinal (VR) surgery access to additional surgical experiences, but also to cross-fertilise ideas among practicing surgeons of all levels.

I find that the best to learn surgery, or improving one's technique, is by watching your own surgical video. This forum is an extension of the same principle – by letting others watch your surgery through the SCO site, you can benefit from others' ideas about how to improve your surgery. If you prefer remain anonymous, you can send a short write up and video clip to me and I will post it on your behalf without any identifiable details.

Traditional video related ophthalmic surgical resources on the web have relied on a fully edited video with background commentary etc. Whilst this is very impressive, producing these fully worked-up videos is very time consuming, and therefore restricts participation to a few enthusiasts. The SCO approach is different - we have a format like a blog, so discussants can submit comments and where possible illustrate it with video clips. For more about easy uploading please CLICK HERE

We look forward to hearing from you.
